The Gathering - Mars, Comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF) and friends.

This image shows Comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF) when it was close to Mars, along with the other beautiful objects near the junction of the Taurus, Perseus and Auriga constellations including the Pleiades star cluster as well as the Spaghetti, Flaming Star and California nebulae. The dusty Taurus Molecular Cloud forms the backdrop.

This is an 11 pane mosaic taken with a ZWO ASI294MC Pro and Sigma 85mm F/1.4 Art lens at F/2.0. For acquisition of this data I used my trusty old combination of Sequence Generator Pro, EQMOD and PHD2.

For the Hydrogen Alpha to enhance the Spaghetti and Flaming Star nebula I used my ASI294MM Pro monochrome camera with a Baader Ha filter & Samyang 135MM F2 mounted on a second rig. For acquisition of this data I used a new combination of N.I.N.A, GS Server and PHD2 on a second laptop.

Running two rigs in the field with different software on two laptops is way too difficult - cabling and power management (running off a single large lithium battery) is a nightmare. I'm looking to change the old SGP / EQMOD based system to an ASIAIR Plus soon.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
Promotions by Reviewers When 3 distinct Reviewers promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for IOTD status.
Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
