Description

This object is a globular cluster located 40,000 light years away in the constellation of Scorpius at a declination of -37 degrees. The cluster spans 10 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of about 100 light years.

The clusters lies next to the 3rd-magnitude star G Scorpii. The dust in this part of sky is so dense that it reduces the magnitude of this cluster by one-half of a magnitude, to 7.2. The low declination of this cluster makes it tough to obtain a crisp image for those of us imaging from the northern hemisphere.
