Description

A golden colour small open cluster, the Westerlund 1, is at the centre. A fully detailed image can be seen in the ESO publication https://www.eso.org/public/images/potw1341a/

In that publication it is mention several quite unique features of this cluster, just to motivate one quote from there " It contains hundreds of very massive and brilliant stars, all of which are just a few million years old — babies by stellar standards. But our view of this cluster is hampered by gas and dust that prevents most of the visible light from the cluster's stars from getting to Earth." and the next one about one of the stars in that cluster: "Such glowing clouds around massive stars are very rare, and are even rarer around a red supergiant— this is the first ionised nebula discovered around such a star."

This is just a sample, it is quite abundant the technical papers on different aspects and peculiarities of this cluster, showing that is a kind of special object.

Now, I was intrigued because one year ago I took a wide field image of this area, using my other scope, the SpaceCat, and a clear yellow dot appear on the image so I waited a year to capture it again, now with the ED80.

Next to the Wd1 is the cluster VDBH 197 and many dark nebulas, a nice region full of small and nice objects.

Description: A few improvements to control the brightness and colour through the field. Too many different colours and contrast to manage. Still more work is needed on the bluish stars.
