Description

NGC 1499 is an emission nebula that looks rather like the US state of California. Yeah, we get it. It looks like California.

It has a very low surface brightness and it’s very difficult to observe visually. I have never seen it visually [bucket list].

The California Nebula contains a hot blue-white star named Menkhib (also designated Xi Persei), by far the brightest star in this image. Menkhib is one of the hottest stars visible in the night sky.

Menkhib is part of an association of  hot stars that were born only a few million years ago. These luminous stars are lighting, heating and ionizing the nebula.
