Description

It is a curious fact that the constellation Cygnus, renowned for its rich collection of deep-sky objects, should contain only two items from Messier's famous catalog. Both M29 and M39 are open clusters, birthed from the expansive nebulae of the Cygnus Milky Way. The edge of this nebular cloud is visble as a faint red glow across the upper right-hand corner of this image. This field highlights the diversity of star colors, ranging from deep red at left to rich blue in the upper right. Perhaps counterintuitively, red stars are coolest (surface temperature of about 3000°K) and blue stars are hottest (over 30,000°K). Under dark skies, M29 is just visible to the naked eye, easily found about 4 moon-diameters south of Sadr, the middle star in the cross of Cygnus.
