Description

The bright star Alnitak in Orion’s belt is near the center of this photograph. NGC 2024 (a.k.a. the Flame Nebula) is a bright emissions nebula to the left of Alnitak. Emissions nebula are clouds of gas that are ionized by nearby hot stars. The famous Horsehead nebula, also known as Barnard 33, is located to the lower right of Alnitak in this photo. The Horsehead Nebula is a dark globule of dust and non-luminous gas in the shape of a horse head, obscuring the red glow of Nebula IC434 which is in the background. This nebula is located in the Orion Constellation and is about 1,500 light years from earth.
