Description

Narrowband imaging attempt number two using a camera lens rather than the telescope for simpler setup and operation while I'm still getting the hang of things. Seeing was poor but at least the weather was mild this time which made equipment setup and image capture a lot quicker and easier.

This was the first outing for my newly acquired full spectrum-modified FujiFilm X-A3 which should have significantly more red sensitivity than the stock model it replaced. I broke the screen on my previous X-A3 and considered a DIY repair plus swapping out the hot mirror to make it better suited for narrowband but I found a converted camera on sale for no more than I'd have paid for the parts to do the job myself (and probably break something in the process).

The image isn't great, but then neither is the data since it was taken during a full Moon when clearly I needed a lot more than one hour total integration time. The Samyang 50mm lens was used wide open at f1.2, although the true figure will probably have been lower due to light being blocked by the filter mounting and step down ring used to adapt it to the lens thread.

It's also a bit soft, which is mostly due to the way I used a star-reduced image layer to add contrast and brightness to the nebulosity. I'll probably have another go at post-processing, taking a more subtle approach to try and get the stars to be more point-like and make them a little brighter to stand out more while hopefully avoiding blowing the highlights in the nebulae.
