Description

Gamma Cassiopeiae Nebula (IC 63 and IC 59)

This nebula complex surrounding the star 'γ-Cassiopeiae' or 'Navi' (the brightest star in the image) consists of an emission nebula (IC 63) and a reflection nebula (IC 59).

IC 63 is the red 'ghostly apparition' in the center of the image and IC 59 is the blue nebula on the left.

The star γ-Cassiopeiae is a variable sub-giant star, at a distance of ~550 light-years, which is rapidly spinning with a rotational velocity of ~500 km/s (1000 times faster than Earth's rotation).

The radiation from the star ionizes the surrounding gas, creating this 'ghostly' nebula complex.
