This is an approximation to true colors…at least for the stars. The narrowband channels were mixed to make an initial image that was then photometrically calibrated (in PI), to render the stars their appropriate colors, which altered the nebula’s colors as well. Then, the stars were removed and the nebula colors were manipulated (which modestly affected star colors—but not the absurd magenta or electric blue), to reach the final image with the stars reintroduced.
My previous image (with a CDK17) had RGB stars, and a lot more resolution (and different color assignments for the HSO channels):
