Description

Ive been wandering the heavens over the the last couple of nights, enjoying crisp, clear, dark skies. Unfortunately a northerly weather front has brought unsteady atmospheric conditions, but we take what we can get.

This 10th magnitude globular cluster appears to have wandered away, 300,000 LY, from the galactic core, but still remains loosely tethered to the Milky Way. It also appears to vary in chemical composition, and its ancient stars are over twice the age of our own sun. The colours in my image are rather ‘red’, given the relative lack of carbon in these stars. Brian Ventrudo of Cosmic Pursuits has produced an interesting blog this month [https://cosmicpursuits.com/3201/ngc-2419-intergalactic-wanderer/].

Not a great image, whilst I waited for my main target, NGC 4565 to clear the chimney, but a good time to ponder the loneliness of space.
