Description

This Astrobin Debut Object is a pair of interacting galaxies located 150 million light years away in the constellation of Hydra at a declination of -2 degrees. This object was classified by Dr. Arp into the category of Galaxies with Irregular Clumps.

The brightest object is UGC 4638, a magnitude 15 galaxy that spans 1 arc-minute in our apparent view and is 50,000 light years in diameter. The small galaxy just above is MCG+00-23-006, a magnitude 17 galaxy that is only 15,000 light years across and is the same distance away from us.

The galaxy structure here is unique – scattered bright blue patches of stars connected with broad star streams. It looks to me like we are catching a merger in progress. My inverted image (Revsion D) show each galaxy being distorted into 2 star stream haloes.
