Description

This magnitude 11 barred spiral galaxy is located 90 million light years away in the constellation of Lepus at a declination of -12 degrees.  It spans 4.5 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a Milky Way sized diameter of 120,000 light years.  The dust appears to us to be about 35 degrees from edge-on.

The central yellow bar is fairly long and marked with dust lanes.  A pseudo-ring encircles the central barred region.  Blue star clouds and pink HII regions are visible throughout the outer disk.  The arms are poorly defined but the result is a beautifully wispy “windblown” star stream pattern.
