Description

This magnitude 17 planetary nebula is located almost 2000 light years away in the constellation of Sagittarius at a declination of -24 degrees.  It spans 4.5 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 2.5 light years.

Like many PN, the outer rim is stronger in HII while the inner section is stronger in OIII.  The inner region is not uniform in appearance.  The OIII appears strongest in 2 lobes, upper and lower, while a balanced whitish section cuts across the center.

The PN extends upward in a faint arc of HII.  It appears that the PN may have seen breakthrough of the bi-polar flow at this end.

The faint blue progenitor star appears at the center of the nebula, just below an unrelated white star.
