Description

The famous Flame and Horsehead nebula in the even more famous constellation of Orion. This is an extremely interesting portion of the sky, especially photographically - the extreme brightness variant between the photon powerhouse that is Alnitak, the very bright Flame nebula, and the very dim silhouette of the Horsehead nebula presents an interesting challenge when collecting photons and processing.

Some lessons were learned while shooting this target. For instance, there was a considerable amount of sensor tilt during the first half of the frames, making one side much softer than the other. This came about after locking the focuser bolt far too tight, tilting the focuser tube itself. In comparison to other imaging sessions, however, this one was relatively pain-free because of how easy it is to find, frame, and focus this target
