Description

Object description:

Sharpless 2-86 is an emission nebula located near the star Albireo in Cygnus. It is illuminated by the energy from the cluster of bright young blue stars, NGC 6823, in the center of the picture. Open star cluster NGC 6823 is 50 light years across and lies 6000 light years away. The age of the cluster is about two million years.

The huge pillars and dark globules of gas and dust pointing towards the open cluster in the centre are shaped by erosion from hot radiation emitted from the brightest cluster stars.

NGC 6820 is the small reflection nebula in the lower right of the picture.
