Description

Centuries ago, the mariners applied the name "coalsack" to any dark vacancy in the Milky Way they saw with their naked eye. Of course, these are not actual holes in the sky, but tremendous dust clouds hiding the stars behind them. The Northern Coalsack, at the heart of Cygnus, is the cousin of the most impressive Coalsack in the constellation Crux (Southern Cross).

This is a four-panel mosaic, consisting of 1 hour per panel, with a rather large overlap between them. The lens was wide-open at f/2.
