Description

The second panel in the mosaic (numbered Panel 10) has Messier 87 (aka Virgo A) as its main focus (top center). This one also contains Messier 58 (far left center) and Messier 89 (upper left) as well as a host of smaller or more distant galaxies. Below M58 is a pair of interacting galaxies I've dubbed "The Nads" (NGCs 4567 and 4568) for reasons that will become apparent when I upload the closeup of them.

Note that I'm publishing each panel separately because each one is stands alone quite well. I'll publish intermediate mosaics along the way as well as longer-focal-length drill-downs on many of the main galaxies ultimately culminating with the full mosaic. I apologize if that seems self-indulgent. But we spend 19 nights out in the cold freezing our globular clusters off, traveled hundreds of miles, packed and unpacked equipment, lugged it in and out, worked through a plethora of issues from erratic guiding to accidentally pouring cleaning fluid into a portable monitor for these shots.

This panel, as the other 17 panels in the mosaic, was shot on 19 different nights between February 19, 2021 and April 11, 2021.

(This is Panel 10 in the mosaic sequence set forth here: https://astrob.in/costym/0/)
