IC 1396 is a large star-forming region and faint emission nebula over 100 light-years across, located in the constellation Cepheus about 2,400 light-years away from Earth. IC 1396 mixes glowing cosmic gas and dark dust clouds energized by the bright, bluish central star called HD 206267.
The Elephant's Trunk nebula(IC 1396A, below the center of this image), a dark patch with a bright, sinuous rim, is a concentration of interstellar gas and dust within the much larger ionized gas region of IC 1396.
