Description

In the first hour of 2021 (Japan time) the clouds disappeared unexpectedly and opened the view to a 17 days old all outshining moon. Though at culmination 84° high up near the zenith the air around the moon was trembling as if scared, but tracking was good. Anyway, I risked a few exposures around Mare Crisium in both monochrome and color with particular interest in the crater lineup of Langrenus, Vendelinus, Petavius (that one with the railway line to its central peak) and Furnerius as well as Mare Fecunditatis.

The annotated final image is a mosaic of six panels each taken at FL=1500mm in infrared.

The ambient temperature was a freezing 12°C cooling the camera sensor down to 24°C which did not make any tangible difference in noise performance since the exposure times were below 9ms at gain 150 to 200. Because of occasional wind gusts I made short videos of 4000 frames stacking 400 for each, mono8/raw8 (10-bit ADC), 1.5x drizzled image without noise issues.

Since there did not seem to be any outlook for the clouds to clear up on that night, the unscheduled imaging session was like a firework which I closed with all fingers at their right places (one in the nose because a mossy tried to enter).

I hope that all friends on AstroBin had an eventless and safe, as astronomers say, 'transit' into the New Year without close approaches and impact craters.
