Description

This description is for revision B. For revision A see the text below the dashes.

I reprocessed this using the tone map process and while it had its moments of challenging situations, overall it made a big improvement in the final result!

Here's how it was put together:

S, H and O masters:
dynamic crop
deconvolution
starXterminator (generating stars)
histogram transformation
TGV Denoise

SHO starless:
channel combination (SHO)
histogram transformation (aligning peaks)
pull out lum for additional processing
channel combination (insert processed lum back in)
color mask for magenta (this image had some magenta on the right side and from an imperfectly removed star halo)
convolve that mask and apply it to this image
reduce levels to lessen magenta
use GAME to make a mask on that top star that still had a troublesome halo
apply that mask to this image
use curves to reduce red and blue until it blends back into the nebula
pixel math in stars

lum:
LHE (2 scales)
MLT sharpening

stars:
channel combination (SHO)
histogram transformation

In retrospect I should have waited to pull the lum until after I dealt with the magenta but it worked out ok in this case. I didn't realize I'd have do do something about it until I got to the end and I tried backing up the minimum amount I needed to address it. Had that not worked I'd backed up further and waited to pull the luminance.

This isn't perfect. There are at least a couple of stars where the remnants of spikes can be seen. StarXterminator wasn't quite able to handle them but it did pretty well. If you don't zoom in too much it isn't noticeable. Overall I'm thrilled with the new version compared to the old one!

I'm not quite sure where the Wizard gets its name. It certainly doesn't evoke wizardliness for me but it is an interesting nebula!

This is another image marred by the smoke out west. It cost half the OIII and a quarter of the SII and 1/8 of the H-a. The smoke really seems to hurt OIII but I guess it's not surprising that it blocks shorter wavelengths more than longer.

We decided we could work with what we had collected though the OIII channel was noticeably noisier.

Here's how I processed it:
H, O and S:
dynamic crop
deconvolution
MLT noise reduction
histogram transformation

SHO:
channel combination (SHO)
color calibration
Invert, SCNR, Invert (to remove magenta halos)
TGV denoise
EZ Star Reduction script
LHE (2 scales)
Curves (hue shifting)
Curves (contrast)
Adv Sharpening script
Dynamic Crop to final dimensions
