Description

This object is a beautiful emission nebula located 1800 light years away in the constellation of Cygnus at a declination of +44 degrees. The dark clouds of this nebula conceal a large region of active star formation.

I find three aspects of this image to be fascinating – the detailed dark nebulae on the left side of the image, the bright orange emission boundary on the right side of the image, and Herbig-Haro 555 just above the center of the image. HH555 is at the tip of the long trunk of towering dark dust extending to the left. At the very tip of the trunk are a pair of white gas jets extending above and below the tip of the trunk. This indicates the presence of a unseen protostar - a star birthed from a cold collapsing cloud of hydrogen gas.

On the left side of the image, a large dark molecular cloud (L935) separates the Pelican Nebula from the North American Nebula (NGC 7000). A very interesting object on the right edge of the image is the tiny colorful nebula designated as LBN 341. Surprisingly, for such an interesting looking object, I could find no detailed information about it.
