Description

This is an image of the Eagle Nebula and it's associated star cluster. Notice the "Pillars of Creation" near the center of the image, made famous by a photo from the Hubble Space Telescope in 1995.

What is Messier 16? Is it the nebula, the open cluster, or both? That's an interesting question! Charles Messier's description of this in his catalog includes the following: `"A cluster of small stars, enmeshed in a faint glow..." In my opinion, this indicated that Messier saw both the cluster and the faint glow of the nebula, so I think the designation "Messier 16" should refer to both of these objects together. In reality, the nebula and open cluster are intimately linked together physically. This is a star birth region, where the stars of the cluster have been born from the nebula. Then the powerful infant stars of the cluster carved out the beautiful shapes we see in the nebula.

What about the NGC 6611 and IC 4703 designations? A search for each of these designations in the SIMBAD Astronomical Database brings us right to M16. But what do the original catalogs say? That will require a bit more research on my part, though I have found some hints that IC 4703 may actually refer to only the nebula portion.
