Description

Shot during a rare evening featuring some clear sky, 81 frames at 120 seconds, iso800, 500mm focal length, and approx f6.8, with aperture reducer and cross-wires fitted to the front of the lens. Approx 40 of each of bias, dark and flat frames used for calibration. Processed using PixInsight with a little help from Photoshop. My third attempt at this target, and the first that came out anything like I had hoped for!
The two pink areas of nebulosity at the left, together with the dark lane running through the middle, can be imagined as looking like a butterfly. The small cluster of stars at upper-right (NGC 6910) is sometimes called the "Inchworm Cluster". Apparently an inchworm is the name given to the caterpillar of a particular kind of moth, and it seems the cluster looks rather like this kind of caterpillar, although I'm not sure I can see the resemblance myself. I like to imagine that the bright star Sadr sits where the bellybutton of Cygnus the Swan would be, if swans had bellybuttons. So my alternative name for the image is "A Butterfly, an Inchworm and a Belly Button". Probably rather silly!
