Description

The open cluster in the lower left is M52, discovered by Charles Messier in 1774. It contains 200 or so stars, and is relatively close to us at 5000 or so light years. At magnitude 5 it appears as a fuzzy patch in binoculars. Messier did not note the nearby, but faint (magnitude 11) nebula NGC 7635. This nebula is popularly known as the "Bubble Nebula", due to the distinct circular shell inside. This shell is composed of gas being emitted by the hot, massive star inside. As the stellar wind hits cooler surrounding gas, it piles up into an interstellar shock wave.  Data were collected over two nights with a 115mm refractor, and consist of 30x120 seconds each of RGB, plus 12x300 seconds of Ha.
