Sh2-216 is technically the brighter arc of nebulosity along the top of the image.  The entire bubble is classified as a true planetary nebula and is cataloged as PN G158.6+00.7 in the HASH data base.   It is only 390 light years from Earth and is one of the closest known PNs.

It's also one of the oldest known at around 500,000 years old.  Due to its old age, it's very diffuse, dim and large.  It has spread out to be 11 light years wide and spans 1.7 degrees on the sky (full moon is about 0.5 degrees.)

For the more serious and inquisitive "PN chasers,"  this paper by Tweedy, Martos and Noriega-Crespo provides very interesting additional information about this enigmatic PN.

The nebula image was captured with narrowband Ha, OIII and SII filters and post-processed with an HSO color palette.  RGB stars were blended into the starless narrowband image.
