Description

M31 - Andromeda Galaxy

----------------------

This image is the result of processing 8 hours of image data I collected last August, of our closest galactic neighbour: the "Andromeda Galaxy".

Although the Andromeda Galaxy has roughly the same amount of total mass as our own Milky Way galaxy, it has more than twice the number of stars (around a trillion stars).

It is located at approximately 2.5 million light years away, which means that the light captured in this image was emitted 2.5 million years ago, when the Earth was undergoing huge ice ages, Mammoths and Saber-toothed tigers thrived and the genus 'Homo' had just started using stone tools.

The latest measurements of European Space Agency's "Gaia" spacecraft suggest that the Andromeda Galaxy will collide with our own Milky Way galaxy in approximately 4.5 billion years.

Also visible in the image are Andromeda's satellite galaxies, M32/NGC 221 (left) and M110/NGC 205 (right).
