Description

After some success imaging fragments of this supernova remnant with my SCT, I wanted to try a wide field snapshot. My Zenithstar II 80ED APO is far too heavy for my ageing LX5 mount and motors, and I don’t have one of those dinky little Redcats (yet...), so I turned to my old SLR lenses.

An aeroplane crossed the field between two 5 min subs, ruining both, but I managed to salvage 50mins worth. After align and combine in Envisage, I tried processing in Startools, but was unable to generate any colour data from the stack (?). Penumbra enabled me to save the final image as a colour file from LRGB stacks.

Given the very bright moonlight, and use of my narrow band filter, I was pleased to get the East and West parts of the veil, even if the detail in between is lacking. A nice article in S&T [https://skyandtelescope.org/astronomy-blogs/explore-night-bob-king/explore-veil-nebula/] has encouraged me to try again under a dark sky.
