Description

M-51, the Whirlpool Galaxy in Canes Venatici, is one of the penultimate face-on spirals in the night sky. Although it does not posses a central bar, it is thought that this galaxy represents how our own Milky Way might appear from the same perspective. Numerous HII regions litter the spiral arms, indicating areas where young stars will eventually form. Its light travels for 23 million light years before reaching our eyes, as does the light from its partner-galaxy, NGC-5195
