Description

This object is an open star cluster located 3000 light years away in the constellation of Orion at a declination of +13 degrees. This magnitude 6 cluster of 30 stars spans 6 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 5 light years.

This cluster's most striking feature is what it doesn't have - nebulosity. There must be little dust in this area. The cluster's lucida is the blue 7th magnitude multiple star Struve 848.

Stephen James O'Meara captures two ends of the spectrum of famous observers' impressions of this interesting object:

- From Walter Scott Houston - "Were this object not already in the NGC, I would never have recognized it as a cluster."

- From Admiral William H. Smyth - "These gatherings awaken still more our admiration of the stupendous richness of the Universe, in every department of which there appears such a profusion of creation, if we may so express ourselves of the works of the Almighty, in which our utmost ken has yet never detected any redundancy, much less anything made in vain."
