Description

C/2021 A1 (Leonard) on New Year's Eve, 31 December 2021. There was considerable vignetting on the corners of the ASI294MM sensor but a decent set of flats was taken and the comet was positioned diagonally across the sensor to maximise the amount of tail, in this case, 2.5º of tail. The actual comet tail extends well beyond this, which is implicit given how bright the tail is in the frame. For reference, ghost (waning) Moon is superimposed to get a sense of scale.

Of course the comet was not this prominent (approximately magnitude 5 and not naked eye) visible from the 'burbs here. The image is deep, however, as every PCG galaxy (down to 19th magnitude) that is in the frame is visible in the frame. There was no particular processing to emphasis either comet or background stars or galaxies — no mask was used.

Leonardo DiCometrio is featuring in a movie (animated gif), which will hit the Astrobin screens (covering 16 minutes of observations) in the next day or so.

And a second feature (covering 48 minutes of observations)
