Description

This object is a rarely imaged tiny planetary nebula located 12,000 light years away in the constellation of Delphinus at a declination of +13 degrees. The nebula spans only 18 arc-seconds in our apparent view. This is a typically sized PN but it appears tiny to us because it is so far away.

This nebula has 4 distinct regions:

1) The bright 12th magnitude central star, white in color.

2) The bright elliptical inner shell with a diameter of 0.5 light years, turquoise in color.

3) The circular intermediate shell with a diameter of 1 light year, blue in color.

4) A very faint outer shell with a diameter of 5 light years, blue in color.

This outer shell is only faintly visible in the main image.

The 3 shells were formed from the progenitor star losing mass at various stages towards the end of its life. The color of the nebula in this RGB image should be a fairly accurate representation of the colors of the nebula.
