Description

This object is a tiny, rarely imaged galaxy merger located 300 million light years away in the constellation of Cancer at a declination of +26 degrees. Each galaxy disk spans 0.6 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a width of 50,000 light years.

I love Arp objects, especially objects like this one which have colliding galaxies, interesting structure and color, and extended star streams. This one looks very much like the more famous, next Arp object in sequence (Arp 244 - the Antennae Galaxies), but this object is in a more advanced state of merger. This object is over one order of magnitude (10x) smaller than Arp 244 to our apparent view.

The luminous white merged core contrasts in color with the brown distorted dust lane, the blue star formation region to the lower right, and the purplish arms. Most of the orange "stars" in this field of view are actually distant galaxies.
