Description

This object is a grand design spiral galaxy located 70 million light years away in the constellation of Serpens at a declination of -2 degrees. This galaxy spans 5 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to an actual diameter of 90,000 light years.

This 13th magnitude galaxy has a fairly low brightness disk but has some interesting structure. I can trace several arms for more than 360 degrees. Numerous star clusters are visible in the galaxy disk.

Supernova SN 2020hvp was discovered on April 21, 2020, 5 days before I took the luminance subs of this image. I didn't know about this supernova until I saw a strange new orange star in my image. The supernova stand out well from this relatively dim galaxy disk.

I am surprised at the color of this supernova. As you can see in my Supernova Collection, this is the only orange supernova I have imaged.
