Description

I just completed my latest images, the Pelican (IC5070) and a crop showing the prominent emission ridge IC5067, which spans about 10 light-years and follows the curve of the cosmic pelican's head and neck.

In IC5067 you can see a tall column of gas and dust with two jets at the top emanating from each side. These are called Herbig-Haro objects, which are jets of matter and partially ionized gas ejected by newborn stars. These jets are ejected at speeds of several hundred kilometers per second and collide with nearby dust and gas, producing dramatic shock fronts that glow as a result of the gas being heated as it collides with the interstellar medium.

Amazing what our amateur equipment can capture from suburban skies.

Thanks for looking.

Mike
