Description

IC 434 is the bright emission nebula behind the horsehead and was discovered by William Herschel in 1786. The horsehead itself was first photographed in 1888 by Williamina Fleming and later catalogued by E.E. Barnard as Barnard 33. The horsehead is comprised of high levels of thick dust and is an active region of formation of low mass stars.
