Description

Leo Triplet.

…………………

This is a small group of galaxies located, as the name implies, in the constellation Leo, at a distance of 30-35 million light-years from Earth. This group is one of the popular (spring) targets for both astrophotography and visual observations. From an area with low light pollution, a pair of binoculars may be enough for these galaxies to be observed.

The 3 galaxies are:

Messier 65 (upper left corner) - is the smallest of the 3 galaxies and also the closest to Earth (31 million light years).

Messier 66 (upper right corner) - is the brightest galaxy in the group and is 35 million light-years away. According to specialists, this galaxy is the largest in the group, with a diameter of approximately 95,000 light-years ( our galaxy is abt 120.000 light years in diameter ).

NGC 3628, also known as the Hamburger Galaxy, due to the angle from which we can observe it - is about 35 million light-years away and is surrounded by a belt of stellar dust that hides most of the galaxy. Measurements made by specialists have determined that the length of this galaxy, as we see it and including that belt of cosmic dust, reaches 300,000 light-years.
