Description

This first light image of the Tulip Nebula with my new Stellarvue SVX102T is dedicated to my mother, Lora, who passed away January 2021 due to complications of COVID-19...she will be missed by many.

Also, special thanks to Salvatore Iovene who's awesome site allowed astroimagers throughout the world to remain connected and sane during the past year. Thanks Salvatore!

The Tulip Nebula (Sh2-101) is a HII region emission nebula in Cygnus. It was catalogued by astronomer Stewart Sharpless in his 1969 catalogue of nebulae. It lies at a distance of 6000 light years from Earth. It is in close proximity to microquasar Cygnus X-1 - site of one of the first suspected black holes. The bowshock from Cygnus X-1 is the blue arc to the right of the Tulip Nebula. It is created by a jet of energetic particles from the black hole as they intersect with the interstellar medium.
