Description

In the sky area of the constellation Perseus and about 10,700 light years distant from us, there is a bright emission nebula, the Fossil Footprint Nebula, cataloged as NGC 1491, although it is also included in the Sharpless catalog as Sh2 -206 and in the Lynds as LBN 704. NGC 1491 is an HII region, that is, a cloud of dust and gas, practically hydrogen, whose gas is ionized by the strong ultraviolet radiation of one or more hot and nearby stars, emitting light and in which there is usually star formation activity.

The star responsible for the ionization of the gases in the nebula is cataloged as BD +50 886 and is a blue star of spectral type O and magnitude 11.2 which, in addition, its strong stellar wind has formed a bubble in the gas that surrounds it, like what happens in NGC 7635, the Bubble Nebula.

In the image you can see a small but very bright irregular nebula surrounded by a larger and less bright one. BD +50 886 and the bubble are in this bright zone, which is cataloged as Sh2-206 or LBN 704. All the other fainter nebulae around it are cataloged as LBN 705.
NGC 1491 was discovered by William Herschel in 1790. But what the German-British astronomer discovered was the small, bright central nebula, LBN 704.

The bright zone, LBN 704, which is what Herschel observed, has an apparent size of about 9' x 6', while LBN 705 spans about 25 arcminutes in diameter.
