Description

The crab nebula in Taurus is a supernova remnant and pulsar, spinning 30.2 revolutions per second.   It's a 30km diameter neutron star, 6500 light-years distant.   It emits radiation in many wavelengths (radio through gamma rays).

M1 is the only supernova remnant in the Messier catalog.    It was seen by Chinese astronomers in 1054 AD as a new star in the sky; much later determined to be associated with the supernova event.  M1 is expanding at a rate of 1500KM per second.
