Description

The North America Nebula, with its plentiful HII gas shines due to the ultraviolet radiation emanating from a hot star. Since no star hot enough could be found in the vicinity, for decades it was speculated that the star must be hidden behind a dark cloud. In 2002, after considerable effort, a likely candidate was located just off the "Florida Coast" by Spanish astronomers. They gave the star the Spanish name from which we derived "Bahamas." One would cruise 2,600 light years to reach it.
