Description

IC63, also known as the Ghost of Cassiopeia, is located in this northern circumpolar constellation right next to one of its main stars, Navi (Gamma Cas) at the center of the "W" asterism. This star is a multiple system and it is also variable in brightness, with a mass that is 19 times that of the sun and a brightness 65000 times more intense. It also rotates very fast, more than 200 times faster than our own sun. It is a sub-giant star that has reached the age at which it is consuming most of its core hydrogen and it will turn into a giant star.  It is located at around 550 light years away from Earth.

IC63, the ghost-looking nebula close to it, is a nebula that is being bombarded by radiation from the proximity of Navi. This radiation makes  the hydrogen in the cloud emit light as it gets excited, which explains the strong response when imaged with an Ha filter. But there is also quite a bit of broadband response in RGB, with some areas showing a strong response in the blue part of the spectrum. This makes this nebula a hybrid emission / reflection nebula. The reflection portion is dust in the nebula reflecting light from Gamma Cassiopeiae. IC63 itself is part of a larger set of nebulae spawning over 2 degrees of sky including IC59 which is primarily a reflection nebula.
