Description

The California nebula is a molecular cloud of ionized hydrogen in the constellation of Perseus. The ionized electrons are stripped away from the stellar wind of nearby stars giving the reddish glow of the nebula. Most likely the star that is responsible for the ionization of the gas is the blue giant Xi Persei just to the left of the nebula
