Description

A Tulip for the dead
Imaged in the last 2 weeks of June: On the left is the Tulip nebula, along with the stellar black hole Cygnus X-1 [blue] shock structure; interstellar material ionized by the BH's radiation.
Historically, Cygnus X-1 was the first object to be confirmed as a black hole following a long debate. It is of 21 solar masses (progenitor star was about 60) and spins around 800 times per second
