Description

This Astrobin Debut Object is a pair of rarely imaged or studied small galaxies located in the constellation of Canes Venatici at a declination of +40 degrees. These galaxies are too far apart to be interacting.

NGC 5313 is the brighter magnitude 12 spiral galaxy on the left, spanning 1.5 arc-minutes in our apparent view. It is located 165 million light years away and is 80,000 light years in diameter. I like the structure of this galaxy – several blue star clusters and red HII regions, a bright yellow core, and a pair of strong arms of unequal length. The long blue region at lower left is interesting.

NGC 5311 is the magnitude 13 lenticular galaxy on the right, spanning 2 arc-minutes in our apparent view. It is located 135 million light years away and has the same size diameter (80,000 light years) as NGC 5313. The concentric dust rings are interesting to me.
