Description

Comet NEOWISE is putting on quite a show over the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia! Last evening the clouds parted long enough to grab twenty-two one minute exposures using a Canon 1100D camera and a Samyang f1.4/85mm lens stopped down to f/4, both carried on an unguided Kenko Sky Memo tracker. The subframes were first aligned on the stars to remove any rotation, and then stacked on the nucleus to preserve the details in the tail.

The yellow dust tail is quite prominent, and distinctly displays synchronic bands. The blue ion tail is fainter, but still distinct. The lengths of the tails can be judged from the field of view of the image, which spans 7.75 degrees, and both tails hint at extending beyond the limits of the frame. A comet with a tail spanning over 15 lunar diameters is a rare sight indeed!
