Description

II couldn’t find a lot about this wonderful planetary nebula NGC7048 in Cygnus except that it is about 5300 light-years away and that it is an evolved planetary nebula oriented 90 degrees to us, and that the progenitor star is probably a white dwarf. Since it is evolved it is of low surface brightness and represents a planetary nebula that is old and thus potentially represents the final stages of the nebula’s dissipation—though appearances suggest it is holding together well, except for the one section that does appear to be dissipating.

Even a simple stretch shows the outer ring, about 1' in diameter, is very red in my L-eNhance and L-eXtreme filters due to the Halpha signal, so I kept that very red color in my processing. Both Registax and AFP-R (which is used by NASA) were used to bring out details and contrast in the nebula. A few of the stars are very bright and easy to bloat so I processed the stars separately and kept them muted to the background so to speak, to allow focus on the nebulosity.
