NGC 6946 - The Fireworks Galaxy

This is an interesting galaxy in a crowded star field. It is on the border between Cygnus and Cepheus, with about half of the galaxy in each constellation. It's name reflects the fact that there has been an unusually high number of super novae detected.

I'm rarely ever completely satisfied with one of my images, but this one comes close. The two issue remaining are some problems with blue registration in the corners. I should probably crop it a bit, but I haven't done so because I like the image with the full field, and the problem is not very obvious until you pixel peep it. The second issue is that the star field might benefit from a mild de-emphasis of the stars. I went back and forth over whether to do it or not, but decided not to at this point, because I really like the crowded star field for this object. It's unusual for a fairly large galaxy like this to have such a crowded foreground of stars.

The data for this image was captured at the Oregon Star Party between July 27 and 30, 2019. Acquisition details are as follows:

Telescope: Celestron EdgeHD 8" @ F/7

Camera: ASI1600MM-cool with Astrodon RGB filters

Mount: Astro-Physics AP1600GTO CP4 with Absolute Encoders

Sub exposures: 102x180 seconds red, 98x180 seconds green and 84x180 seconds blue.
