Description

Saturn was quite low in the sky then, about 17° above the horizon. Nevertheless, relatively good seeing permitted an image of the gas giant.

The effective focal length can be estimated from the native focal length of the telescope (1500mm, depending on focus position), the focal length of the Barlow lense and the optical path length to the sensor, to about 3450mm.

Assigning the (inner edge) of the Cassini division to the gray value minima in a line profile across the planet and its rings (using ImageJ), and taking into account the actual distance between Saturn and Earth of 1375,2e6 km (from Stellarium), the measurement yields a radius of the Cassini division of about 118000 km - in excellent agreement with literature. In other words, the estimate of the effective focal length is quite reasonable.
