Description

I recorded the data during the two "dynamic" nights of 20 and 21 September 2022, including passage of clouds, wind gusts, bad seeing and difficult guiding. On the positive side, there was moonless sky. After generously vetting out the sub-exposures, the integrated stars came out way better than expected - here is the result.

Sh2-140 is a visible emission nebula in the constellation of Cepheus; it is part of the large star-forming region of the Cepheus Molecular Cloud Complex, and it is located about 900 parsecs (2900 light years) from the Sun. The star responsible for the ionization of the nebula's gases is HD 211880, a blue star on the main sequence, visible just above and left from the center.

The central region of the nebula is completely invisible in optical images, while the near infrared images and radio waves show the presence of a very concentrated cluster of stars.

Several multi-wavelength observations have been conducted on this nebula, and on the infrared sources located behind it. The observations on the whole infrared band were carried out mainly in order to identify any young stars present in the region; following these studies, a first catalog was drawn up including all the young stellar objects of Sh2-140, consisting of three infrared sources, IRS 1, IRS 2 and IRS 3, to which two other sources discovered later were added.
