Description

After a stormy start to the evening, I waited a bit until trekking out to Milwaukee Astronomical Society grounds on Saturday night in the hopes that skies would stay clear and seeing would improve. When I got there around 9, the lightning continued to put on an impressive display in the thunderclouds far north of the grounds, but the skies stayed clear around the grounds, although the seeing had to be about a 1 of 5.

I got out my ZWO ASI 462MC astrocam and fired up the laptop for few rounds with Sharp Cap, starting first with a 9" SCT scope. Afterward, I  moved on to the dome to try my imaging on a 12.5 inch, f/8.8, Newtonian reflector - aka the A-Scope or Planet Killer, with the help of a couple of veteran MAS members to get it going. Besides its large aperture (12.5 inches), long focal length (f/8.86), and unique secondary mirror, I was able to use the Atmospheric Dispersion Corrector (ADC) to correct for the prismatic effect of the atmosphere - which was still pretty turbulent.
